O'Neil auditioned for Canadian Idol's third season in the early part of 2005, when she was still a high-school student. Judges loved her voice and she made it to the Top 100 Round. O'Neil was given high praise by the judges. However, she experienced significant losses in the Top 10 weeks and Top 9 of the Finals as she fell into the lowest 3 and 2 spots respectively. Judges were shocked by this and advised the viewers to select contestants such as Melissa O'Neil, who had the strongest singing skills. O'Neil has been consistently delivering stellar performance since then, never fell below the top three. With two other stunning performances on September 7, 2005, the day that O'Neil along with Rex Goudie made it to the final two, judge Werner reportedly predicted that the headlines in the morning papers were going to read O'Neil defeated Goudie to win the title of third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and the most youthful winner in the competition's time . O'Neil immediately received a call from Canadian prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her on her win at Canadian Idol.
